New York: Following the heroic act of jumping onto subway tracks to protect his unconscious blind owner, the guide dog named Orlando is guaranteed a loving home for his retirement.
Cecil Williams, who is currently recovering in a hospital with Orlando faithfully by his side, had previously planned to receive a new working dog in January or February as a replacement for his 11-year-old black Lab.
However, now he envisions an ideal scenario where he can have both a working dog and a retired dog as a companion, provided that logistics, physical capabilities, and finances permit.
In the event that having two dogs is not feasible, the family who raised Orlando as a puppy has expressed their absolute delight in welcoming him back into their home, according to Guiding Eyes for the Blind spokeswoman Michelle Brier. They are overjoyed that their beloved canine has made such a significant impact.
Guiding Eyes has kindly offered to manage those inquiries,” stated Jim Mandler, a spokesman for the hospital, in response to the numerous offers of financial support and other assistance that poured in after the AP released the interview and photos of Williams and Orlando in his hospital room.
Williams mentioned that if he ultimately decides to care for two dogs, he would require assistance in covering the expenses for the Lab’s care.
“We are still uncertain about Cecil’s decision,” Brier commented. “He is currently facing a challenging situation… It’s an extremely emotional and intense period.
The organization was in the process of establishing a fund and intended to share details on its website. In the event that Williams does not require the financial assistance, the funds will be allocated towards supporting other guide dogs, as confirmed by Brier.
Williams, aged 61, and Orlando both emerged with only minor injuries on Tuesday after a train passed over them—an incredible outcome following a distressing ordeal that began when Williams felt lightheaded on his way to the dentist.
Witnesses recounted how Orlando barked fervently and attempted to prevent Williams from falling off the platform. Matthew Martin, speaking to the New York Post, shared that Orlando leaped onto the tracks as the train approached, gently kissing Williams in an attempt to encourage him to move.
Williams mentioned on Wednesday that he is “feeling slightly improved,” although he was uncertain about the duration of his hospital stay.
“I still have some discomfort in my head from where they inserted the staples. There are bruises on my body,” he shared. “They are still conducting tests to determine the cause.”
