Norway plans to offer Romania a sale of 32 pre-owned F-16 fighters.

Norway made an announcement on Friday regarding its intention to offer Romania the opportunity to purchase 32 previously-owned F-16 fighter jets. The fellow NATO member, Romania, is in need of replacing its outdated Soviet MiG-21 fighters, particularly due to the ongoing situation with the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine. The deal, valued at 388 million euros ($385 million), involves the delivery of the refurbished fighters in 2023 and 2024, as stated by the Norwegian defense ministry.

The agreement encompasses the provision of spare parts, maintenance, and technician training services.

According to Norwegian Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram, this transaction will significantly contribute to strengthening the air force of a NATO ally. Additionally, he emphasized that the contract will be mutually beneficial as it allows for the refurbishment of the aircraft, thereby supporting the Norwegian defense industry.

Norway recently retired its fleet of 64 F-16 fighters, which were originally purchased in the 1980s. This decision was made as the country transitions to deploying fifth-generation F-35 stealth fighters.

The initial batch of F-16s, introduced in the 1970s in the United States, were classified as fourth-generation fighters. However, Lockheed Martin continues to produce upgraded versions with enhanced avionics and weapon systems, often referred to as 4.5 generation aircraft. These modernized variants offer improved capabilities compared to their earlier counterparts.
