The EA-18G Growler is constructed based on the successful and combat-proven F/A-18 series of aircraft, which have served as the U.S. Navy’s primary carrier-based multi-role fighters for many years. This makes the EA-18G Growler significantly swifter and more maneuverable than previous electronic attack aircraft, which had been based more on transport aircraft designs.
The EA-18G was initially employed in combat during Operation Odyssey Dawn, enforcing the UN no-fly zone over Libya in 2011. The EA-18Gs were redeployed from Iraq to assist operations in Libya in 2011.
