Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is widely recognized as one of the most commercially successful actors of his generation. Now, as he ventures into the world of XFL, he hopes to replicate his box office triumphs.
With the American football minor league commencing on Saturday, The Rock delivered a passionate and captivating speech before the match between the Vegas Vipers and Arlington Renegades, reminiscent of his performances in movies.
“When they told you that your dream was over, let me tell you the truth: your dream is just beginning,” he addressed the players.
“Because what you’re going to do is step onto this field, line up, and show the world what it truly means to be hungry, carrying that sense of determination on your shoulders.
“I understand that feeling because I share that same drive. We are here because the ‘X’ in XFL represents the intersection of dreams and opportunities. You bring the dreams, and we provide the opportunity. Now, let’s embrace the game we all love and the reason we are gathered here today.”
In August 2020, Johnson, along with a group of investors, acquired the rights to the XFL for approximately $15 million after the league had faced bankruptcy amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This marks the league’s third iteration, initially launched in 2001, which unfortunately collapsed after a single season. It was revived in 2020 but prematurely halted due to the pandemic.
Therefore, I extend this message to every player, coach, and above all, to all the fans. With immense appreciation, humility, and an incredible level of enthusiasm, I utter these words as we commence our season. XFL, let’s have an amazing time together!” Johnson exclaimed, eliciting cheers from the crowd.
In the opening game of the XFL season, the Arlington Renegades emerged victorious with a close 22-20 win over the Vegas Vipers. The league consists of six other teams: the DC Defenders, Houston Roughnecks, Orlando Guardians, San Antonio Brahmas, Seattle Sea Dragons, and St. Louis Battlehawks.
Taking place on the weekend following the Super Bowl, the XFL introduces some unique rules that differentiate it from the NFL. These include three overtime scoring rounds per team, a 35-second play clock, and three timeouts per half.
